Making LGBTIQA+ history

On the 45th anniversary of the first Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras join us at Customs House to share unique perspectives of photography as activism on Gadigal land in Sydney.
From a time when change seemed impossible, until now when precious won freedoms are under attack.
Jacqui North, Creative Producer of the Exhibition Liberate! will guide this dynamic panel discussion with photographers, Sallie Colechin, Sarah Malone and Aman Kapoor.
Sallie Colechin's images demonstrate the building of the LGBTIQA+ movement. As part of the Gay Solidarity Group, Sallie helped organise the First Mardi Gras and 4th Homosexual Conference. Sallie’s photographs highlight women and reflect her proud feminism and ongoing belief that the personal is political. She worked at the Rape Crisis Centre and Elsie Women’s Refuge and was president of the Pride History Group.
Sarah Malone makes photographs with the ballroom community, transwymyn/transwomen and First Nations. Flow from deep organic connections as a costume designer, photographer, photographing ballroom from its inception in Sydney clubs and meets. Sarah is a member Haus of Supa Massive Blaq Moles with Tyra Bankstown. Haus Sarah is a descendant of the First Nations, thought to be a Birpai woman, and William Barry, born in Belize in 1801. Exhibitions include selections in the Moran Prize and Head On. Sarah is Red Rattler’s resident photographer in Sydney, and is listed on Blak Lens.
Aman Kapoor works closely with human rights activists as part of the LGBTIQA+ community. Notably making images on the streets with trans and gender diverse community in the lead-up to the Federal Election in 2022. He has exhibited at the National History Museum London and won national-level UK photography competitions, winning the Sony AU and Camera House competitions in Sydney.
